Why Seek Root Canal Treatment?

Posted on: 24 September 2021

Getting a root canal may not sound fun, but sometimes this procedure is necessary. In fact, with modern dental treatment, having root canal therapy performed on you doesn't need to be unpleasant at all. However, if you need more reasons to pursue this line of treatment, here are four reasons to have root canal therapy:

1. Relieve tooth pain.

Many people first realize they need a root canal when they go to the dentist complaining of tooth pain. Root canals are necessary when decay has reached the pulp of a tooth. People with this condition often experience sharp, continuous pain in their teeth that may worsen when eating or drinking. Painkillers can temporarily relieve the ache, but the only way to relieve this type of tooth pain for good is to treat the cause. Seeking root canal treatment sooner rather than later can help you feel better.

2. Prevent dangerous tooth infections.

Dental decay can sometimes lead to infections. When bacteria find their way inside your teeth, a painful tooth infection can result. These teeth infections can be dangerous, especially if they spread to your brain. Abscessed teeth can sometimes require emergency medical care. If you don't want to find yourself at the emergency room in the middle of the night, it's a good idea to have root canal treatment performed as soon as your dentist says it's necessary.

3. Save badly decayed teeth.

Sometimes teeth are so badly decayed that dental fillings alone cannot save them. In these situations, dental extractions are sometimes required. However, root canal treatment can help you avoid tooth loss. During root canal treatment, your dentist will remove the living tissue from the interior of your tooth. They will clean the empty root canals and fill them with a protective, rubber-like substance before placing a dental crown on your tooth. This process can allow you to retain previously decayed, weakened teeth.

4. Avoid spending more money than you need to.

Some people put off root canal treatment because of sticker shock. It's true that getting a root canal is pricier than having an ordinary dental filling done. However, root canal treatment is more inexpensive than some other treatments that you might need if you delay proper dental care. Having a root canal can help you avoid a dental extraction and the need to purchase dentures or dental implants as a result. A root canal can save you thousands of dollars in avoided dental procedures.

Providing Children With Dental Knowledge

When my three children were young, they were all excited to go to the dentist. The dentist's office was great fun with a large fish tank and a variety of puzzle toys in the waiting room. I liked the pediatric dental office so much that I jumped at the chance when I was offered a receptionist job. Many of the children who came to see the dentist were not nearly as happy as my children. Most kids were scared and anxious, and I learned fairly quickly that the children were worried because they had no idea what to expect. The dentist at the office provided me with a set of dental tools that I could show to the children. I explained how each of the devices worked. This eased the fears, and I started this blog so parents could share dental information with their children before dental visits.
