3 Things To Know About Dental Implants

Posted on: 5 November 2019

If you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth, there are different types of tooth restoration options available. Dentures and bridges are two of the most commonly used tooth restoration options. However, there are also other options to consider. Dental implants involve using a titanium implant to act as a replacement tooth root. Dental implants are considered to be the most natural-looking and feeling tooth replacement option. If you are considering dental implants, here are three things to keep in mind.

How The Process Works

The first thing that you need to consider if you think that implants may be the right option for you is how this procedure works. Dental implants often involve multiple surgical procedures. Before the implant is surgically inserted, you may require additional procedures such as bone and tissue grafts to ensure that the area is able to support the implant. Once the implant is put in place, another surgery will be needed to put the connector, or abutment, into place. After that, a crown is attached to act as a replacement tooth.

How Long The Process Takes

Another thing to keep in mind if you feel that dental implants are right for you is that the process can take some time. Multiple surgical procedures are needed and you will need to heal in between each procedure. How long the process takes will vary from person to person depending on the condition of your jawbone and where the implant is being placed. The fastest you will be able to have an implant put into place is five months for the lower jaw and six months for the upper jaw. If bone or tissue grafts or other procedures are needed, the process of having a dental implant put into place can take upwards of a year.

How Much Dental Implants Cost

Another thing that you should be aware of is how much dental implants cost. The total costs will vary depending on the complexity of your case. A single dental implant will range between $2,400 and $3,000 on average if additional procedures are not needed. With bone grafts and other additional procedures, your costs for a single dental implant will likely be closer to $4,000 and $10,000. Most dental insurance policies do not cover the cost of dental implants.

If you are thinking about dental implants, there are a few things that you should know. First, you need to know how the process works and that multiple surgical procedures are required. The process to have an implant put in place can also be lengthy, lasting anywhere from a few months to upwards of a year. The cost of implants can also vary but typically works out to a few thousand dollars.

Providing Children With Dental Knowledge

When my three children were young, they were all excited to go to the dentist. The dentist's office was great fun with a large fish tank and a variety of puzzle toys in the waiting room. I liked the pediatric dental office so much that I jumped at the chance when I was offered a receptionist job. Many of the children who came to see the dentist were not nearly as happy as my children. Most kids were scared and anxious, and I learned fairly quickly that the children were worried because they had no idea what to expect. The dentist at the office provided me with a set of dental tools that I could show to the children. I explained how each of the devices worked. This eased the fears, and I started this blog so parents could share dental information with their children before dental visits.
