How To Spot A Possible Infected Tooth

Posted on: 8 May 2018

It is very important for you to make sure that you are well aware of the signs that indicate that there is a need for a trip to the dentist for an infected tooth. If you are currently not overly aware of the signs that indicate an infection, you will want to take a look at the following information.

Pus Is Showing Up

This is not something that you want to see in your mouth because it is a sure sign that there is some serious trouble brewing inside of your tooth or behind your gums in your jaw bone area. Since this is also a sign that your infection is getting larger and possibly spreading, you will need to make an urgent call to your dentist. Never assume that just because you cleaned up some of the pus and that you do not see any more coming out that you have solved the issue. There is most likely still a lot of pus that needs to be cleared out through dental work and antibiotics.

Sensitivity When Chewing On One Side

If you have found that you now have to chew on one side of your mouth in order to avoid an intense amount of pain, you are most likely dealing with an infected tooth. This is not something that you can ignore in hopes that it will go away. You might find some pain relief because you are avoiding placing pressure on the tooth, but that is certainly not a solution. You will need to have a dentist examine your teeth and possibly take x-rays to find the infected tooth.

Red Swollen Gums In One Spot

While there are other problems that can cause your gums to become red and swollen, if it is happening around a single tooth, this could very well be a sign that there is an infection brewing under the surface of your gums. That is causing the irritation in that one area. Your dentist will need to decide the best course of treatment depending on the location and the severity of the infection.

Should you find that you have any of the previously mentioned signs of an infected tooth, or that you are still worried about your dental health even without experiencing any of those signs, you will want to get an appointment set up. The sooner you make it in to see the dentist, the sooner your dental issue can be resolved. Call right away for the appointment and make sure that you are explaining to the receptionist that you suspect that there is an infection, so you might be able to be seen quickly.

Providing Children With Dental Knowledge

When my three children were young, they were all excited to go to the dentist. The dentist's office was great fun with a large fish tank and a variety of puzzle toys in the waiting room. I liked the pediatric dental office so much that I jumped at the chance when I was offered a receptionist job. Many of the children who came to see the dentist were not nearly as happy as my children. Most kids were scared and anxious, and I learned fairly quickly that the children were worried because they had no idea what to expect. The dentist at the office provided me with a set of dental tools that I could show to the children. I explained how each of the devices worked. This eased the fears, and I started this blog so parents could share dental information with their children before dental visits.
