Four Reasons Why You Need To Continue Good Oral Hygiene With Dental Veneers

Posted on: 24 August 2017

Dental veneers can really transform your smile. They can make your smile the whitest it has ever been. They also give your teeth a more uniform appearance, rather than really pointy canines and uneven front teeth. However, having veneers does not mean you should stop brushing and flossing. Here are four reasons why.

Your Own Teeth Are Still Present

Veneer literally means something that covers up the surface of something else. In the case of dental veneers, fake teeth adhere to the facades of your own teeth. This means that just behind the veneers your own teeth are still present. To avoid cavities, you still need to brush your teeth.

Veneers Do Not Protect Your Gums

Your gums still need to be massaged and flossed to keep the blood circulating through the tissues and keep food particles out. Veneers play no part in protecting your gums, nor do the veneers prevent food from getting stuck in your gums. To keep your gums healthy, you have to floss. Brushing also helps remove bacteria that can get trapped along the edges of the gums, just above/below the edges the veneers.

If Your Teeth Rot and Fall out, the Veneers Go with Them

If your teeth rot from poor oral hygiene and fall out, your veneers go with the missing teeth. There is nothing left for the veneers to adhere to. Good oral hygiene not only prevents the loss of natural teeth, but also the loss of expensive veneers that cannot be replaced when no natural teeth are present.

Veneers Are Expensive

Veneers are expensive because they are considered cosmetic. What you paid for your veneers comes entirely out of your own pocket. If you do not treat your own teeth well, you could lose the veneers. Then all of that money you spent making your smile perfect is lost and cannot be regained. Additionally, you can only replace lost teeth and lost veneers with implants or a partial denture, which would make it very obvious that you have both missing teeth and missing veneers.

Follow Your Dentist's Care Instructions

After you have all of your veneers installed, be sure to follow your dentist's care instructions. He or she will tell  you exactly how to take care of your own teeth and the new veneers so that your smile remains flawless for years to come. If you experience any dental problems after you get veneers, talk to a dentist at offices like Beck Pearce Dental right away.

Providing Children With Dental Knowledge

When my three children were young, they were all excited to go to the dentist. The dentist's office was great fun with a large fish tank and a variety of puzzle toys in the waiting room. I liked the pediatric dental office so much that I jumped at the chance when I was offered a receptionist job. Many of the children who came to see the dentist were not nearly as happy as my children. Most kids were scared and anxious, and I learned fairly quickly that the children were worried because they had no idea what to expect. The dentist at the office provided me with a set of dental tools that I could show to the children. I explained how each of the devices worked. This eased the fears, and I started this blog so parents could share dental information with their children before dental visits.
