Getting Braces As An Adult: Options To Consider For A Perfect Smile

Posted on: 3 February 2017

Getting braces as an adult can seem daunting, but it's a growing trend among people well beyond the age of acne and high school self-consciousness. There are many braces styles on the market today that can correct your crooked or uneven teeth without being as obvious as the traditional metal braces you have grown up seeing. If you are considering getting braces, feel confident not only in your options, but in the fact that around 20% of people who wear braces are over the common age for getting them. Here are some dental correction choices for your needs you can discuss with your dentist.

Lingual braces

If your teeth are severely overlapping or very crooked, you may need the traditional metal style to give you the greatest results. This doesn't mean you have to wear your braces where everyone can see them. Consider lingual braces instead. These braces are just like the classic metal style you are familiar with, but with a twist: they are placed behind the teeth rather than in the front, offering a near-invisible result. Once you get used to these braces you will be able to talk and chew foods normally, and no one will even be able to tell if you are wearing them. These braces can also get you results faster than other styles, allowing you to achieve your perfect smile more quickly.

Clear braces

Clear braces are just like metal braces in the way they are placed, but they are made of clear ceramic to make them less noticeable. These are a great option for you if you need drastic dental correction over a few years. Talk to your dentist about clear braces so you can view how nearly invisible this option is even though they are placed on the front of your teeth.

Aligners

Growing in popularity are dental aligners, custom-fit clear aligning guards that are placed over your teeth to correct them over time. This is a great option for you if you have mild to moderate correction needs and are willing to dedicate the time to visit your dentist on a near-monthly basis to have them replaced as your teeth improve. Since these braces can be removed, they can be more hygienic in use. You may be required to wear a retainer in addition to dental aligners as part of your oral care to give you the best results. Talk about this option with your dentist to see if it is one you can benefit from.

Providing Children With Dental Knowledge

When my three children were young, they were all excited to go to the dentist. The dentist's office was great fun with a large fish tank and a variety of puzzle toys in the waiting room. I liked the pediatric dental office so much that I jumped at the chance when I was offered a receptionist job. Many of the children who came to see the dentist were not nearly as happy as my children. Most kids were scared and anxious, and I learned fairly quickly that the children were worried because they had no idea what to expect. The dentist at the office provided me with a set of dental tools that I could show to the children. I explained how each of the devices worked. This eased the fears, and I started this blog so parents could share dental information with their children before dental visits.
