3 Tips For Keeping Your Mouth Healthy

Posted on: 25 June 2015

Everyone knows they should brush their teeth, floss and rinse their mouth on a regular basis. However, how many times do you actually follow the recommended guidelines? It takes a lot more than just squeezing some toothpaste out of a tube and swirling it around inside of your mouth to create the healthy mouth you desire. To help make sure your oral health is at the top of its game, try implementing some of the tips below into your daily routine.

Sit back, relax and enjoy your day.

You might not realize it, but stress affects more than what you might think. It can cause headaches, make you sleepy and even affect your immune system. When your body is weak, it cannot fight off infections that might be brewing up inside of your body. If you have any bacteria in your mouth, your body will struggle to fight it off and have a harder time keeping your mouth healthy. Lower acid and up saliva production by simply taking some time for yourself every day. Relaxation is the key to a happy and healthy you.

The right toothbrush matters.

Many people think that all toothbrushes are the same. That isn't the case. You should opt for one with soft bristles. Using the proper technique, you can expect your brush to last a couple months before needing to be replaced. Once the bristles start bending, you need to throw it away. However, you shouldn't wait until the last minute before replacing your brush. Straight bristles can end up becoming blunt and cause injury to your gums and teeth.

Time to scrape the tongue.

For the most part, many people have never even heard of a tongue scraper before. However, these unique inventions were created for the sole purpose of eliminating bacteria in your mouth and keep your breath smelling fresh. Food tends to break down quicker than you realize, but it stays in your mouth long enough to give your breath the foul odor that makes others run for the hills. Spend a couple minutes using the tongue scraper to get the fresh breath you crave and kick extra bacteria to the curb.

In following the tips above, you can keep your teeth healthy and your gums free of diseases. It only takes a few minutes of your time every day to take care of your mouth, but the results can last for years to come. For more tips on great oral habits, talk to a professional like David Semrau, DDS.

Providing Children With Dental Knowledge

When my three children were young, they were all excited to go to the dentist. The dentist's office was great fun with a large fish tank and a variety of puzzle toys in the waiting room. I liked the pediatric dental office so much that I jumped at the chance when I was offered a receptionist job. Many of the children who came to see the dentist were not nearly as happy as my children. Most kids were scared and anxious, and I learned fairly quickly that the children were worried because they had no idea what to expect. The dentist at the office provided me with a set of dental tools that I could show to the children. I explained how each of the devices worked. This eased the fears, and I started this blog so parents could share dental information with their children before dental visits.
